In a global economy where many people from different countries interact on a daily basis, people do not always know the backgrounds and cultures of others. Even with good intentions, a user might inadvertently offend a colleague or client (e.g., referencing (or not) holidays or special events, using a bold ink color, using negative terms, using slang or colloquial terms, etc.). A method is needed to increase cultural awareness and help user avoid making (seemingly) insensitive statements.

The novel contribution is a cultural validation/checker that applies data mining to communication entries. The system and method passively identify words, phrases, or terms that may be considered culturally insensitive or offensive within the communications/text/etc., and then flags the identified terms for the end user. The user can manually correct the statement or use an auto-correct feature to select an alternate recommendation from the analytics engine.

To implement the method and system in a preferred embodiment:

1. System scans receiver names/identifiers (IDs) to identify the location of the receiver and the associated potential cultural heritage (e.g., social connections, self-identification "profile", name origin, etc.). To do so, the system can offer/enable:

A. Cloud or social sharing function that allows users to detect an associated cultural heritage, if it is enabled, so that the system can properly flag content that might be considered culturally insensitive, inappropriate, and/or offensive

B. Expansion to customize the flags based on historic communications and social interactions with the user; system identifies terms or topics the person finds offensive vs. acceptable based on the type of communications and the receiver's familiarity with the...
