Abstract

Public Safety (PS) vehicles need arrival incident scene as soon as possible using at least part of the road system shared with civilian vehicles. It is also important to place least side impact to civilian vehicles which further reduces the traffic accident between PS vehicles and civilian vehicles. This is achievable by introducing a method to dynamically choose the lane for PS vehicle for every segment of the route according to multiple factors, broadcast the corresponding lane occupancy information based on V2X technologies. With this method, civilian vehicles are able to clearly understand which lane the PS vehicle would utilize. The civilian vehicles could yield the right of the road more safely.

PROBLEM

When there is PS vehicle passing through, current practice is the civilian vehicle yield to right of the road. There are these several problems:

The civilian vehicles start the yield maneuver only when the siren is heard or flashlights seen. It can be a little bit late as the PS vehicle need wait the maneuver done before taking the lane to go ahead.

In heavy traffic situation, the right road may not be able to accommodate all civilian vehicles. There is no clear direction what’s the second choice.

Another problem is it is possible the best lane for the PS vehicle is the right-most lane which contradicts with existing practice.

SOLUTION

The method introduced in this article is based on V2X technology. The route to the destination is also decided by normal existing navigation algorithm or system.

Based on that, a dynamic lane selection algorithm is introduced to consider multiple factors on every segment of the route. Once the lane is selected, it is communicated with civilian vehicles through V2X technology just before the PS vehicle passing through this segment. In this way, the civilian vehicle has enough time to yield the best lane for PS vehicle passing through in advance.

OPERATION

A flow chart is showed to describe the detailed procedure.

In step 1, the Tadv is decided which is the minimum advance time this segment need to clear the reserved lane for the PS vehicle. It is the maximum value chosen from the three values:

§  The largest time needed to clear lanes in the reverse direction. It is calculated as (length of the segment) / (average traffic speed of the segment)

§  The largest time needed to clear each lane in the same direction. It is decided by how many and what type of vehicles in that lane. It is calculated as experience lane change time of every type of vehicle.

§  The longest time needed to broadcast the information to vehicle at the ends of the segment.

In step 2, the Tarr is decided which is the estimated arrival time of the PS vehicle to this segment.

In step 3, the lane selection algorithm is executed. The PS vehicle preferred lane is chosen from all lanes which has the least value which furthe...
