Abstract

The proposed idea describes a bayonet fit for an interchangeable end effector. An interchangeable end effector needs a way to transmit movement to it and to establish electrical contacts. The end effector contains a plurality of rods that are coupled to corresponding rods in the stem of the instrument. The rods transmit movement to the jaw and blade. SUMMARY 

The proposed idea describes a bayonet fit for an interchangeable end effector. An interchangeable end  effector needs a way to transmit movement to it and to establish electrical contacts. The end effector  contains a plurality of rods that are coupled to corresponding rods in the stem of the instrument. The  rods transmit movement to the jaw and blade.  Electrical contacts are made through the same rods. 

DESCRIPTION 

Recent qualitative market research revealed a need for a single energy instrument with interchangeable  end effectors that could be used for specific jobs in thoracic surgery.   

The stem consists of a tube in which five rods are located. The central rod is allowed to translate axially  and to rotate. The peripheral rods are constrained in such a way that they are only allowed to translate.  When no end effector is coupled to it, the peripheral rods are locked in position. The end effector has  corresponding rods. The end effector axial rod can only translate, is slotted, and engages the flats at the  end of the stem axial rod as the end effector is pushed on the stem, guided by the first segment of its  cam slot. The peripheral rods of the end effector move between the peripheral ro...
