Abstract

Snap ring is one of the most common components used to retain parts assembled on shafts. They sit in a groove which have slightly smaller diameter (Di) than the dia. of shaft (Ds) & width slightly bigger than ring thickness (W). To fit a snap ring in place they need to be expanded beyond shaft dia. (Ds) and then driven over the shaft up till the groove where it snap in place. Snap ring when expanded beyond certain dimension deforms permanently (plastic deformation) resulting in loose fit with shaft. So this tool will help in safely expand and place the snap ring in position.

INTRODUCTION


Background/ Problem
Snap ring is one of the most common components used to retain parts assembled on shafts. They sit in a groove which have slightly smaller diameter (Di) than the dia. of shaft (Ds) & width slightly bigger than ring thickness (W). To fit a snap ring in place they need to be expanded beyond shaft dia. (Ds) and then driven over the shaft up till the groove where it snap in place. Snap ring when expanded beyond certain dimension deforms permanently (plastic deformation) resulting in loose fit with shaft & warranty issues. In cases when shaft has several grooves & snap ring needs to be assembled after skipping few groves the operator has maintain the force on expander to keep snap ring expanded. If operator eases on pressure the snap ring snaps in unintended groove in which case the snap ring needed be removed from groove & put in correct one. Mallet are many times used to drive snap rings in place. Since mallet hits only a portion of snap ring at any particular hit they sometimes deform the snap ring.

Other existing solution: Snap ring expanding plier

Snap ring pliers are available in steps of incremental diameter range. Each step has few mm of range the plier can work with.

Disadvantages:


• Over expansion of snap ring, Some times beyond its elastic limit if operator changes expanding limit

• Safety - if snap ring is not held properly while expanding, it flies off.

• Fatigue - operator need to keep the force applied till ring reaches grove or use a pusher/mallet to push the ring to its place.


• In case of shaft with multiple groves, its difficult to go over 1st grove and reach 2nd grove. Snap ring which is always trying to spring back to its original shape very often snap in 1st grove itself.
