Abstract

Question-based search is getting popular these days. Instead of specifying keyword that identifies those ones you are targeting, question-based search conveys the intent of what you are looking for. We propose a mechanism to embed conversational experience with search box, which can provide a better, non-disrupting, seamless user experience. The conversational search box contains two components. One is the search box itself. The other is a tooltip presenting AI bot’s responses or questions. Using CSS tooltip, a speech bubble like capability, it can present system’s statements. User can use original search box as input facility interacting with the system. These form an adjacency pair in typical conversations.

By convention, this digital assistant like feature launches a chat window to engage end users. It is quite interrupting while you are browsing online store and using its search box.

We propose a mechanism to embed conversational experience with search box. Using CSS tooltip, a speech bubble like capability, it can present system's statements. User can use original search box as input facility interacting with the system. These form an adjacency pair in typical conversations.

As the advance of AI bots, it is not surprising to employ them into an online retailer's store. A typical implementation is to launch a chat window and make conversations within it. However, this is quite disrupting.

We think a conversational search box can provide a better, non-disrupting user experience. The conversational search box contains two components. One is the search box itself. The other is a tooltip presenting AI bot's responses or questions.

Be default, the search box is used to conduct keyword or question-based search. The tooltip will pop up in the following situations:

The number of matching is greater than a certain threshold, or no matching is found

When the relevancy is lower than a certain threshold
The number of categories of those matching is greater than a certain threshold Customer tried three or more searches without clicking any result
User typed 'help', 'I need help' or something similar

Once the tooltip is shown, it means the conversation mode is active. AI bot and user can converse to clarify questions, hence, a personalized search...
