Disclosed are a method and system to collect environmental and biometric information using sensors on Internet of Things (IoT)-enabled devices, analyze the information, and then predict events and provide relevant alerts. When a person is directly involved in an accident (e.g., motor vehicle, fire, etc.) or natural disaster (e.g., earthquake, hurricane, etc.), current systems to do not provide automatic communications to alert a person's contacts , rescue services, or authorities. The person involved might have no way to signal for help or contact others. Neither do systems automatically alert a traveler who might be coming to an area where an accident or disaster has recently occurred, allowing the person to avoid the area.
Current methods include manually initiating outbound communications (e.g., call, text, etc.) when in the midst of an emergency,
which might be impossible, or proactively searching websites (e.g., news, weather, etc.) to gather information prior to travel; this information might be inaccurate or not up to date.
A new method is needed to inform significant personal contacts, the community, and/or authorities about accidents or dangerous situations.
The novel contribution is a method and system to collect environmental and biometric information using sensors that are already available on Internet of Things (IoT)-enabled devices (e.g., smart phones, tablets, wearable devices, etc.), analyze the information, and then predict events and provide relevant alerts. This new method can automatically inform family, friends, the community, and/or the local authorities about accidents or dangerous situations. The system stores each of the recorded events in a database to maintain a history of events.
At a high level, the system collects environmental information from sensors embedded in mobile devices . The analytic algorithm is a cognitive system that:
1. Collects the data from different sources (i.e., sensors, websites, historical database)
2. Processes and analyzes the data based on expected behavior, historical trends, predicted or imminent danger, and current damage
3. Provides advisories and alerts in order to avoid or prevent incidents or minimize the number victims when an event is
The analytic algorithm can cross-reference the data collected from the mobile devices with some secure and reliable website information. In addition, new data is cross-referenced with historical data (i.e., stored in the database). The analysis of all the data provides the information needed for the system to send precise notifications about accidents and disasters , helping the mobile device users to request help as well as informing others about these accidents and disasters. The system appropriately shares the
