Real-time information about road conditions is essential for drivers to be able to take the proper actions and prevent accidents. Current methods have limitations in terms of the amount of information captured, the locality, relevancy, and currency nature of the information.

The disclosed system informs drivers when entering an area with dangerous road conditions. The system records environmental conditions and vehicle conditions. The system then sends that data to a localized receiver, which is ideally placed on mile markers or light posts. Alternatively, the system can send this data to a cloud service.

The receiver then transmits the data up and down the street to other nearby receivers and subsequently begins broadcasting the information to vehicles that are approaching that same dangerous condition. The system then periodically transmits an early warning notification to passing vehicles, which allows the driver to avoid dangerous situations. In addition, the system suggests actions to drivers in these situations.

Data Collection

To collect and associate the environmental and location information, as a vehicle travels along a road, the onboard computer system gathers data about the vehicle's performance.

The steps for implementing the data collection method follow:

1. A device is installed in the vehicle to gather information 2. The device is connected to the onboard computer system 3. The onboard computer system is updated to monitor for events 4. When an event occurs, status is reported to the installed device, including environmental and location information 5. The device records this information along with the time of the event and location of the event (from a GPS unit)

Data Reporting

Upon the occurrence of an event, the device reports this to an external location.
