Hauling trucks have different weight restrictions based upon the associated capacity, the capacity of the roads traveled, and laws/restrictions for a given region. For instance, different states have different import laws on what can cross each border. In the near future, these delivery trucks will be self-driven, which opens up opportunities to ensure weight restrictions are always met.
Existing technologies enable trucks to self-weigh the load; however, the human operator must ensure the weight is correctly read, and then act accordingly.
The novel contribution is an enhancement to self-driving trucks that automates the process for evaluating the load weight and rules and restrictions for the programmed route and ensuring that the appropriate action is taken to keep the company in compliance . The novel system receives as data the current measured load weight, examines the currently defined route for any weight restrictions on that route, and, if it identifies a discrepancy, forces the truck to remain in place (i.e., at the loading dock) until the issue is resolved.
A self-driving truck must ascertain whether it can legally carry the loaded weight to its destination. Once loaded, the truck is programmed with the destination. The system calculates the best route to the destination, based up on the current road restrictions.
If the truck is unable to plot a rou...
