Abstract:

Widget and overlay for navigational display to aid night navigation by visualizing lights of interest with their proper color and characteristic. Widget will show on a display what the navigator should expect to see out the window, allowing quick verification of visual references and enhancing safety of navigation.

Description:

When sailing at night, a high level of concentration is required for safe navigation. Adding light flash characteristic to the chart or dedicated widget will enable the navigator to quickly determine his whereabouts in relation to the navigational lights. Another problem is that the visible range of lights is often much greater than the currently displayed chart area, thus you may have to zoom out and lose chart detail in order to see interesting light information. Playing with zoom levels and changing scales when you have very few visual references introduces uncertainty when it comes to ability to judge distance and also having to perform simple actions, such as locating the operational controls and using them distracts the navigator from the task of keeping watch. Lights view will present important information faster and easier, and would limit the need for user actions.
