When filtering or searching items with an "or" operator between the filtering criteria, the search engine returns a list of items. To help the user filter the results, a method is needed to indicate to the user which criteria were relevant to which result. Some of the result items may have been relevant to more than one criterion in the filtering expression.
An existing method is to highlight or bold the relevant characters in the search result snippet.
The novel contribution is method to use a filter flag to indicate which results in a set directly match the criteria. This is an easy graphical way for the user to see which of the filtered items relates to which filtering criteria, one or more. Each of the filtering criteria is attached to a graphical symbol or an icon (e.g., color, a pattern, etc.). In the results set, each item has an adjacent filter flag that contains the symbols for all matched criteria for that result.
