Abstract

The foaming properties of surfactant compositions in aqueous media have been evaluated using the SITA-FODL and RAFFA-BURETTE apparatus developed at Lubrizol. Mixtures of surfactants such as sodium Laureth sulfate with 2 moles of ethoxylation, SLES2, cocamidopropyl betaine, CAPB, and Glucamate Methyl Glucose Caprate / Caprylate / Oleate, MEGCCO, were dissolved in water and their foam properties evaluated at 300, 500 and 1000ppm dilutions. Results of the tests indicated that the two foaming characterization techniques were extremely sensitive to discriminate the foam properties of the compositions and that the methods herein can be effectively used to optimize the foam properties of a variety of cleansing compositions including liquid soaps, detergents, shampoos, body washes and related products.

Experimental


Prepare solutions of the following surfactant composition

SLES2/CAPB/MEGCCO: 10/2/2 wt/wt (parts by mass)

SLES2 is Sulfochem™ ES-2 Surfactant ; Sodium Laureth Sulfate (2 mole) - Anionic Surfactant manufactured by The Lubrizol Company
CAPB is Chembetaine™ CAD Surfactant ; Cocamidopropyl Betaine - Amphoteric Surfactant manufactured by The Lubrizol Company
MEGCCO is Glucamate™ CCO Thickener; Methyl Glucose Caprate / Caprylate /

Oleate AND Propanediol - Non-ionic thickener and surfactant manufactured by The Lubrizol Company

SITA - FODL Experimental


A solution of surfactants was prepared having the following ratios: SLES2/CAPB/MEGCCO: 10/2/2; Total Solids = 14 wt%


The surfactant solution was diluted to 300 and 500 ppm active surfactant with medium hardness water


Foam properties were measured in the SITA instrument at 40°C. Foam data was acquired in quadruplicate
