Abstract

Message previews and notifications are a common feature in electronic devices to display a small amount of information to help the user decide if they need to react to the main message. These previews can often contain sensitive information, such as a preview of the start of the message, and have no security required to view them so anyone who can see your phone is able to read your messages. This is a large problem highlighted by the fact that the first result you get when searching "message previews" is a site detailing how to disable them.

Adaptive method for display of notifications

Upon reviewing message/notification, our disclosure would assess the situation the phone is in. If it decides that it is in a private situation then it would display the full previews as normal. If it detects that the situation isn't private then it will either not show a preview at all, or only display the non-sensitive part of the message/notification until the situation becomes private.

Advantages over prior art

    Our solution solves the issue of sensitive information being displayed while keeping to functionality of the previews/notifications.

    One example implementation would be when you have your phone on the table while on a train with your co-workers and you receive a personal message. Instead of displaying the whole message the device detects that lots of people can see the phone, or are in the vicinity and only displays the title of a message or sender. Once the phone is picked up and only viewable by the owner, or the owner has fully authenticated and logged into the device, it shows the whole preview or all of the message content.

    2. Examples of how this disclosure could assess the privacy of the situation include, it is likely that a combination of these techniques would be used:

    Phone listens to background noise - in this case, a high level of background noise would be considered detrimental to the privacy, however, if in a quiet environment the message preview would be shown.

    Phone uses eye tracking - In this case, if lots of eyes were detected to be able to see the screen it would be considered detrimental to the privacy, however if only 1 or no pairs of eyes was detected the message preview would be shown.
