Abstract

Mobile computing devices may have two screen orientating rotation modes, auto-rotation or manual rotation. The auto-rotation method uses an accelerometer to detect a change in orientation of the mobile computing device (relies on constant gravity), but does not work well when the operator's orientation changes. For example, if someone is working sideways, such as under a vehicle, and turns the device to orient with their face, the mobile computing device screen will not match the orientation of the users face.

Screen Auto-Rotate Method for Mobile Computers

Mobile computing devices may have two screen orientating rotation modes, auto-rotation or manual rotation. The auto-rotation method uses an accelerometer to detect a change in orientation of the mobile computing device (relies on constant gravity), but does not work well when the operator's orientation changes. For example, if someone is working sideways, such as under a vehicle, and turns the device to orient with their face, the mobile computing device screen will not match the orientation of the users face.

A software application could use the front-facing camera on the mobile computing device to auto-rotate the screen. The correct orientation of the screen is to align with the orientation of the user's face. The mobile computing device recognizes the orientation of the user's face through the detection of prominent facial features, such as eyes, nose, and mouth. The mobile computing device determines the orientation of the screen using sensors, such as an accelerometer. The software application then rotates the displayed image to align the display with the user's face. Unlike more precise face recognition software, here the application only needs to decide which direction the face is oriented, which is much simpler and more reliable.
