Abstract

A cup packer element with a metal support, or thimble, for the purpose of fitting the assembly to the outer dimension of various grades and sizes of tubulars rather than to a designed and finished packer mandrel. The assembly slides on, over one end of the tubular. The assembly utilizes a swellable seal ring between the metal support ring, and the outer dimension of the tubular, while providing a dependable seal - accommodating the lack of outer surface finish and the acceptable variance of the outer dimension of standard oilfield tubulars.

A cup packer assembly that can be fitted to various sizes of standard oilfield tubulars - the packer assembly would consist of one packer cup with a supporting metal ring. The supporting metal ring would have a minimum ID to ensure clearance over the OD variance of its respective tubular size, and a maximum ID tolerance to support an integral seal ring. In order to accommodate the acceptable variance of the OD of standard oilfield tubulars, an integral, swellable seal element would be utilized in a machined groove in the ID of the supporting metal ring. The machined groove and element would be of dimensions that fit within the supporting metal ring, while allowing sufficient swell volume to maintain a seal between the ID of the metal ring and the variance of the tubular OD. The cup assembly would be slid over a pin end of a joint of casing. The assembly may include set screws to secure the assembly to the tubular OD, or it could be allowed to move along the length of 1 joint of tubular, between coupled connections. When run into fluid in a wellbore, exposure of the swellable elastomer material to a compatible reactive fluid would cause the elastomer to expand in the space between the casing OD and the ID of the supporting metal ring, providing a fluid barrier. Pressure rating of the barrier once fully reacted may vary, depending on wellbore conditions and elastomer properties.
