Disclosed is a method to amend proper metadata to an image or video. The core idea is to provide a system and method for detecting the location (i.e., distance/direction) of users that are in the focus of the photo metadata, identify the items in focus based on the focal distance of the photo, and aggregate that information gathered into the metadata of the photo taken.

Photo Metadata Collection Based on Image Focal Distance

Adding accurate metadata to photos can enhance user experience by adding more context to a photo (e.g., exact location description) to better document the user's memories. In addition, accurate metadata enables user to know the exact subject matter and contents of a photograph (photo).

The novel contribution is a method to amend proper metadata to an image or video. The core idea is to provide a system and method for detecting the location (i.e., distance/direction) of users that are in the focus of the photo metadata, identify the items in focus based on the focal distance of the photo, and aggregate that information gathered into the metadata of the photo taken. This approach enhances photo metadata by enabling the detection of image items (i.e., person/place/thing) that are in the focus of the photo.

To implement this system and method in a preferred embodiment:

1. Camera captures the image/photo 2. Camera determines the focus distance of the photo 3. Camera makes request to cloud service with the following information: A. Focal Distance (e.g., 10.5 feet)

B. Direction (e.g., 214 degrees southwest)

C. (Optional) The types of items the metadata should include (e.g., buildings, statues, people's mobile devices, etc.)

4. Cloud service retrieves information about that location relative to the focal distance and direction
