A Smart Meal/Drink Inventory Planning System for Airlines

A method is needed to ensure that airlines have ample food and beverage inventories on board to satisfy the requests of the passengers.

The novel solution is a smart method for airlines to select the correct food and drink items, in the correct quantities, for each flight.

The basic idea is to keep information about past passengers' meal/drink orders and leverage that information to predict future orders (i.e., the next flight). Many variables affect how the system predicts the choice, including the flight duration, the type of meal being served (e.g., breakfast, lunch, or dinner), etc.

Passengers may specify preferences for food/drink while completing an online reservation, but might want a different selection during the flight. Some airlines offer ordering meals/beverages through an interactive screen. Airlines can store the information that comes from that system and predict what the passenger will order the next time that passenger is on a flight. If such systems are not available, then the airline can store passengers' meal/drink selections at the time of service. The user interface could be as simple as selecting the seat and the food/meal ordered for that seat. The rest will be for the back-end system to identify who was sitting on each seat, and then link that to the actual meal/drink selection.
