Abstract

Bonded parts, like sheets or three dimensional components, often require mechanical fixation means during welding processes or mechanical joining process. Double sided tapes are known as fixation method during welding processes. These double sided tapes typically are double coated tapes with a carrier in the middle. Thin adhesive foam tapes ("TAFT") are foamed tapes without a carrier. By using TAFT during the welding process, some risks associated with the use of a carrier material are eliminated. The foamed adhesive supports the welded joint.

Bonded parts, like sheets or three dimensional components, often require mechanical fixation means during welding processes or mechanical joining process. This is not only the case for metal sheets in friction stir welding process, but also in laser welding, beam welding or for plastic materials like thermoplastic components which can be welded need fixation.

Most of the time, mechanical clamping is used as temporary fixation means for these parts. Mechanical clamping however requires high pressure and clamping forces for fixation. Depending on the geometry of the parts, mechanical clamping also requires individual clamping geometries, which often implies high handling effort and additional production costs.

Double sided tapes are known as fixation method during welding processes (see in particular US2004173662 A1). These double sided tapes typically are double coated tapes with a carrier in the middle.

It is herein described the use of thin adhesive foam tapes (hereinafter referred to as "TAFT"). The thin adhesive foam tapes for use herein are foamed tapes without a carrier. The risk associated with the use of a carrier material during the welding process is therefore eliminated. The foamed adhesives supports the welded joint.
