Title:  Combination Control and Pressure Relief Valve

Abstract:  A shear seal valve that can act as both a control or relief valve due to its ability to be actuated either actively (controlled input) or passively (uncontrolled input).

Description:  A common control valve in downhole sampling tools is known as a "borehole exit" valve which has many purposes including: allowing well pressure into the tool to eliminate stresses from large pressure differentials, allowing an exit path for dirty fluid to be cleaned from the tool before pumping sample into the tanks, and allowing (when closed) formation pressure to build and enter the tanks during pumping. These tasks can occur at any time; therefore the valve needs control over whether it opens or closes.
