Abstract

The invention discloses a method for ensuring effectiveness of inhibitor coating in refinery piping. The method involves spraying inhibitor chemicals at specific locations into piping via gas stream for ensuring effective coating of the inhibitor. For coverage at the bends, the method involves injecting the inhibitor at the horizontal section leading to the bend, injecting the chemical at the vertical section ensures optimal coverage of the vertical sections. In one aspect the invention introduces spraying of inhibitor chemicals with droplets in a specific size range for more effective coating. The method proposes spraying droplets in the size range 100-300 microns for effective coating of the surfaces. The advantages of the invention are better corrosion protection of refinery overhead piping leading to enhanced plant availability through less frequent maintenance outages of plant.

BACKGROUND

The invention relates generally to corrosion protection in oil refinery systems and to a method for ensuring effectiveness of inhibitor coating in particular. Corrosion of crude distillation unit overhead section is a common problem in the refineries. This is caused by the hydrochloric acid that is generated by the hydrolysis of calcium chloride and magnesium chloride salts present in crude oil. The common treatment strategy to mitigate this corrosion is the injection of chemicals in the overhead section. The treatment chemicals comprise of a film former that coats the inside walls of the pipes and a neutralizer that deactivates the corroding species. Current injection methods often lead to uneven coverage of pipe surface, leading to severe corrosion of the exposed pipe surfaces.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION

The invention discloses methods to ensure effective coating of inhibitor chemicals in refinery overhead piping. The method involves spraying inhibitor chemicals at specific locations into piping via gas stream as shown in FIG. 1. For ensuring effective coating of the inhibitor at the bends, the method involves injecting the inhibitor at the horizontal section leading to the bend as shown in location 1 of FIG. 1. In one aspect, to ensure effective coating of vertical pipe walls, the method involves injecting the chemical at the vertical section such as location 2, for example.
