Abstract

A new line of acid functional hyperbranched polymers is disclosed herein. These waxes are produced via controlled polymerization to yield products with acid functionality built into each molecule. These acid functional hyperbranched polymers are available in forms ranging from liquids at ambient conditions to hard solids. The amount of acid functionality can be varied from none up to about 200 mg KOH / gram.

A new line of acid functional hyperbranched polymers is disclosed herein.  These waxes are produced via controlled polymerization to yield products with acid functionality built into each molecule. These acid functional hyperbranched polymers are available in forms ranging from liquids at ambient conditions to hard solids.  The amount of acid functionality can be varied from none up to about 200 mg KOH / gram.

The new line of acid functional hyperbranched polymers has the following application benefits:

·                As pigment dispersants for organic or inorganic pigments.  The new wax can be used to improve the dispersion of pigments into toners.  The combination of acid and hydrocarbon functionality helps wet the pigments and enable better color development and improved loading. The new wax can be used at levels up to 35% by weight on the pigment.

·                As a compatibilizer for wax in toner resin.  The new wax can be used to improve the compatibility of non-functional waxes such as paraffins, microcrystalline, Fischer Tropsch paraffins, and polyethylenes into toner resins.  The hydrocarbon portion of the new wax is compatible with the non-functional waxes, while the acid portion of the molecule provides better compatibility with the toner resin, resulting in smaller wax domains within the toner resin.  The new wax can be used at levels up to 15% by weight of the resin.

·                As a fuser roller release wax in toner resin.  The new wax provides release of the fused toner image from the fuser roller.   The new wax can serve as the only fuser release wax, or can be used in combination with other fuser release waxes.  The new wax can be used at levels up to 15% by weight of the toner resin.

In summary, the new acid functional hyperbranched polymers can be used as components of additives for toner applications.  Benefits include, but are not limited to, improved pigment dispersion, improved dispersion of waxes within the toner resin, and improved release from fusion rollers.
