Abstract

Disclosed is a method for RC delay balanced retargeting. The method determines the RC delay of a timing path, retargeting an element of the timing path for a corrective optimization action. The method determines the changed value of RC delay post- corrective retargeting and performs RC balanced retargeting as a compensatory adjustment post corrective retargeting.

Problem

The process for retargeting tools is constrained by the current methodology; the timing of a path cannot be altered when retargeting elements (e.g., wire segments, vias, etc.), which belong to a timing path.

Timing Path comprises of 3 segments between two registers as shown in the figure below. The M2 segment requires a certain amount of retargeting not feasible with current method flow since it will change the RC delay of the timing path thereby leading to a functional failure.

A method is needed to provide retargeting tools with increased flexibility to retarget segments without altering the RC delay through a timing path.

Solution/Novel Contribution

The novel contribution is a method for RC delay balanced retargeting. The method determines the RC delay of a timing path, retargeting an element of the timing path for a corrective optimization action. The method determines the changed value of RC delay post-corrective retargeting and performs RC balanced retargeting as a compensatory adjustment post corrective retargeting.

The RC delay can determine post parasitic extraction using an existing delay model. The corrective retargeting operation comprises any retargeting operation as deemed fit by the retargeting tool for a DRC optimization operation. The method performs the compensatory adjustment using iterative incremental adjustments to the RC delay, using retargeting operations. The compensatory adjustment comprises performing the
