Method and System for Discovering Custodians for a Cloud Data Set for a Legal Matter

Usually, an attorney or paralegal have to know a list of custodians to include for a legal matter so that the attorney or paralegal can send hold notices or collect and preserve related files as a data set. For a legal matter, the data set is a data file search result based on the search criteria like data types, date range, search filters like keywords in readable text files and assigned custodians. However, it is possible the attorney or paralegal may know the keyword(s) to search for preserved files but not all the related custodians that associated with the files. Therefore, a new way to discover custodians along with legal file discovery process is required.

Disclosed is a method and system for discovering custodians for a cloud data set for a legal matter.

In accordance with the method and system, an attorney or paralegal specifies all required search criteria without including any custodians like file types, date range, and assign search filters which may be present in the files like keyword "testimony", "oath", etc. Thereafter, the method and system performs a search and discover the custodians along with the search results. The search results contain a list of discovered files and in each file, a number of custodians are associated.
