Uptower replacement of piston seals on hydraulic (pitch) cylinders

Introduction


This idea relates to replacement of piston seals on hydraulic cylinders, primarily for pitching of blades in wind turbines.

Existing technology


Today the piston seals can be replaced through the front of the cylinder. This requires that the rod is completely removed from the tube and includes a high risk of contamination.

Description


If the (pitch) cylinder is designed in an intelligent way it will be possible to replace the piston seal by removing the rear end of the cylinder and push the rod back. If the option to replace the piston seal through the back end of the cylinder is included from the beginning, the rod can be designed to accomodate this. If a seal system on the piston is including guide rings it will be possible to push the piston back - leaving one guide ring inside the tube. That will not only keep the rod/piston in the right position - but also prevent contamination on the rod side of the piston. The seal(s) can then be replaced and the rear end of the cylinder can be remounted.
