Flood map systems of the prior art either rely on analyzing historical rainfall and flooding data to make flooding predictions. Further, in order to generate a flood map interactively, river gauge readings that are very few in number are captured and the readings are only confined to rivers that are known to have flooding history. Thus, existing solutions do not accurately report actual flood inundation situations right at the time when they are happening or when the flood inundation locations that are being monitored are not rivers with known flooding history.

Disclosed is a method and system for detecting flooding incidents instantaneously by capturing and analyzing raining events over time using a community of easily distributable small Global Positioning System (GPS) enabled Internet of Things (IoT) monitoring devices.

The method and system identifies exact locations of the flood inundation situation in a particular area at a particular point in time especially during flash flood scenarios. The method and system accurately displays actual flood inundation situations in devices such as, but not limited to, mobile devices, laptops, smart phones, computer systems and anything that is internet enabled right at the time when a flood event is happening.

In accordance with an embodiment, the method and system includes the following components.

The method and system includes small solar powered GPS enabled IoT monitoring devices that can be placed at any location where flood inundation is to be monitored. The IoT monitoring devices have a water sensor to detect if there is water in the immediate area where the IoT monitoring devices are located

Further, the method and system includes a central server that constantly tracks the reporting state of each active GPS enabled IoT monitoring device in the system and analyzes and aggregates the state information to determine if a particular area is raining or has been flooded.

Further, a mobile software application (app) interactively displays the analyzed and aggregated data from the central server on demand for the requested area and time. The working of the various components of the method and system is as follows.

The small solar powered GPS enabled IoT monitoring devices are placed in interested locations by anyone such as, but not limited to, city workers, government agencies, university researchers, TV weather teams, outdoor recreationists, high school clubs, social network members. The solar powered GPS enabled IoT monitoring devices are of relatively low cost and are easily available for distribution and are centrally activated and inactivated by the central server. The IoT monitoring devices have a water sensor that can detect the presence of water around the IoT monitoring devices.
