Method and System for On-demand Creation of Data Storage (DS) Unit Mirrors during Disaster Situations

From time to time, individual data storage (DS) units or even whole sites or regions comprising a data storage network (DSN) memory may face substantially higher than normal risks, such as, for example, natural disasters, civil unrest, and conflicts. Given the substantially higher cost of later rebuilding should the affect DS units be lost or taken offline for substantial lengths of time, it may be cost-effective to pro-actively mirror DS units that face abnormally high risks. A process identifies DS units that face an abnormally high risk and compute an estimated probability of a fault requiring a rebuild to recover and multiplies it times an estimated cost of rebuilding. This is cost is then compared to an estimated cost of pro-actively mirroring the DS unit. When the cost of pro-actively mirroring a DS unit is less than the estimated cost of rebuilding times the probability of a fault requiring rebuilding the process begins the process of mirroring the slices on that DS unit.

Disclosed is a method and system for on-demand creation of DS unit mirrors during disaster situations.
