Mobile device users, and others in the area of mobile device users, are often inconvenienced or annoyed when the volume on the device is either too high or too low, or the ambient noise in a room is too loud. For example, a person using earbuds or headphones to listen to music at work might not realize that someone is speaking to or calling that person. In another example, a person might be talking on the phone, walk into a crowded room, and have to turn up the volume to hear the caller.

The novel contribution is a system for dynamically changing the audible output of the device based on the location/proximity to othersand the associated relationships with the user. For example, close proximity of the user's boss might cause an automatic decrease in volume, while close proximity to a co-worker does not cause any volume change. In addition, the system can increase/decrease the volume based on the distance of the person associated with the adjustment (e.g., at 10 feet the volume goes down to level 5, at 6 feet the volume goes down to level 3, etc.).

One method of using this dynamic volume control system is with a micro location service, which helps a system identify mobile activity in and around a physical location.

To implement the system in a preferred embodiment:

1. A device can employ a micro-location method to determine the presence of nearby devices (e.g., Bluetooth* Low Energy (BLE), Wi-Fi triangulation)

2. The mobile user identifies relevant groups/parties (e.g., co-workers, boss, employees, etc.) for whom the system must adjust the audible output

3. The mobile user identifies the range of proximity for the groups/parties. This could be determined by the location manager or by the user, or can be customized based on relationships of the relevant parties (e.g., five feet for co-workers, 20 feet for boss, etc.)

4. The mobile determines a volume level for each individual group/party (e.g., 20% volume when coworkers are nearby)
