Abstract

Disclosed is a method for a user to initiate contact with known or unknown people that the user can see at a distance but are beyond the range to make an exact identification or verbally communicate. The system is implemented using mobile devices, mobile device cameras, augmented reality glasses, and/or wearable devices, as well as dedicated software and cognitive analysis systems.

Method to Initiate Communication from a Distance using Visual Tagging

This article addresses the situation in which one person wishes to communicate with another who is visible from a distance but not exactly identifiable, not known at all (i.e.,
a stranger) or not within range of voice communication (i.e., the person is too far away to hear). Without knowing another's name or contact information, a person cannot warn someone at a distance of possible dangers or other urgent situations.

For example, at the scene of a motor vehicle accident, User A wants to enlist the help of other nearby people while waiting for emergency assistance to arrive. User A does not know User B, but needs to communicate with User B. User A is at a distance from User B and attempts to get User B's attention by yelling and raising a hand. (Figure 1) User B is unaware of User A's attempt to initiate communication.

A method and system are needed to facilitate communication between two users who are at a distance from one another that enables visual but not verbal communication, and when the communicator does not have the recipient's contact information (e.g., name, mobile phone number, etc.). A user must be able to initiate contact with people in view, but out of range to allow exact identification or verbal communication. Current solutions allow a user to initiate contact via phone call or text message only for defined or known individuals or groups of people.

The novel solution is a method for a user to initiate contact with known or unknown people that the user can see at a distance but are beyond the range to make an exact identification or verbally communicate (e.g., raised voice, phone call, text).

The solution is a method and system that addresses the urgent situation in which a person needs to visually identify and alert people in distance. At a high level, the system:

1. Visualizes people on an electronic map at a distance based on the zooming function of a camera

2. Visualizes locations on an electronic map in the distance based on determined Global Positioning System (GPS) coordinates

3. Identifies the people by a name visualized on a map from a mobile application of people or by facial recognition

4. Determines the phone number with which to contact the person identified and visualized on the map

5. Enables the user to initiate contact from the map 6. Changes or broadens the scope of people to identify on an electronic map based on the movement of people or the developing situation

The core prerequisite components for implementation include:

 Mobile/augmented reality glass device

 Camera with zoom used to capture an image of people as input to identify person

 Display to:

- Visualize people on an electronic map

- Allow for selection of person or people by touch on the electronic map to initiate a phone call or text message

 Smart watch to i...
