1 Introduction

This document describes a technique for drying different kinds of heat sensitive products using straight or angled nozzles in a spray dryer. The technologies described in this document may be used and com- bined in all possible ways for all products within dairy, food, chemical, agro-chemical, energy, biotech- nology, pharmaceutical, healthcare and many more, and are not limited in application to the examples given but are wide open for all such products. Even though this document describes a way of making polymer with angled nozzles, it is also possible to produce heat sensitive products, polymers and similar products with rotary atomizers instead.

Throughout this document the terms "gas" will refer to air or an inert gas (or mixture), such as e.g. nitro- gen,.


1.1 Drying systems

Spray drying is the most widely used industrial process involving particle formation and drying. It is high- ly suited for the continuous production of dry solids in either powder, granulate or agglomerate form from liquid feed stocks as solutions, emulsions and pumpable suspensions. Therefore, spray drying is an ideal process where the end-product must comply with precise quality standards regarding particle size distribution, residual moisture content, bulk density, and particle shape (1) (2) (3).

Spray drying involves the atomization of a liquid feedstock into a spray of droplets and contacting the droplets with hot air in a drying chamber. The sprays are produced by either rotary (wheel) or nozzle atomizers, these types being well-known to persons skilled in the art of spray drying. Evaporation of moisture from the droplets and formation of dry particles proceed under controlled temperature and air- flow conditions. Powder is discharged continuously from the drying chamber. Operating conditions and dryer design are selected according to the drying characteristics of the product and powder specifica- tion.
