Can we offer group discounts, where a candidate group and its interests are identified using social connections? ii. Can we use shared calendars for customizing and offering group discounts? iii. Context of the problem:

Users' calendars are shared online, and available for access by others.

It is possible to find the social connections information among the users from their social media data.

Right coupons will allow individuals in a group to benefit from group economics while considering all offers available

System for rolling out group discounts based on social connections & shared calendars:

Data storage system to keep track of the individuals' activity schedule (thus availability) for the future days (limited by the number of days of look ahead)

Data storage system to keep track of the individual's social connections details

Derived from different social networking communities


Data storage system to keep track of the target social meeting places (malls, movie theaters, food outlets, etc.)

The activity details would be added into the System by the users who want to get benefitted by the System
For the individuals who are subscribed into the System, the System tries to add/populate missing activity details derived from other online shared data sources for a user:

Online data (shared social networks data & online media, etc.)

This functionality would be enabled for those users who opt for this feature

Method for rolling out group discounts based on social connections & shared calendars:

System finds the location information for the activities of all users


If the location information is not associated with an activity when it is added to the System initially, the System predicts activity location information. The prediction method would do the following:

Categorizing the activities of the users

There may be few activities which are not specific to a location.

Example activity description: "NEFT some amount to a friend"

Based on past activities, their completing results and the profile maintained for each user, predict the location information for the activities.

To roll out a group discount offer for a target group (discount offers for malls, movie theaters, food outlets, etc.) for a given day & time period, the System predicts the availability of a group of individuals before rolling out the offer to those individuals. The prediction method would do the following:

Individuals availability for that day & time period


Location information of the activities before & after the group discount target location; and the historical information about the time needed to travel the places (location of before activity, group discount target location) and (group discount target location, location of after activity)

The group discount offers/Ads are rolled out to individuals, who may or may not be socially connected based on the type of the discount offer being rolled out.

It is possible to customize the offers based on the group of individuals chosen for rolling out the group discounts (since the planning is being done a priori)
