Abstract

Aircraft line maintenance is a highly regulated process followed by maintenance engineers to make an airplane airworthy. Planning and co-ordination are two key factors required for efficient line maintenance. Currently, the maintenance engineer manually co-ordinates with multiple parties for support and uses a paper based line item checklist for the line maintenance process. The proposed system helps the maintenance engineer in planning and coordinating the line maintenance process by using a mobile device. The mobile device uses a dynamic checklist for updating each line item status, image processing technology to detect anomalies, and voice processing techniques to make the maintenance process hands free. A wearable device connected to the mobile device may be used for aiding the hands free operation.

1. INTRODUCTION

Airworthiness is measure of an aircraft's suitability for safe flight. Aircraft line maintenance is a highly regulated process followed by maintenance engineers to make an airplane airworthy. The maintenance engineers have to perform numerous activities as part of the line maintenance process. The activities include receiving information on airplane arrival and location, planning for maintenance tools and accessories, collecting fault information and maintenance procedures, and reporting maintenance activities. These activities require the maintenance engineer to co-ordinate with multiple support teams for information. This leads to increased workload and reduced efficiency. Hence, a mechanism is required to provide information to the maintenance engineer from multiple support teams with minimal effort.

2. PROPOSED SOLUTION OF THE PROBLEM

The proposed solution increases the efficiency of line maintenance process. The overall efficiency of the line maintenance can be increased by automating the process. Automation can be done by providing access to required information to the maintenance engineer in a mobile device.

As part of line maintenance process, walk around inspection is carried out by the maintenance engineer. Unlike existing systems where the maintenance engineer fills the status of each line item in a predefined paper checklist, the proposed system provides an electronic checklist on the mobile device. The mobile device consists of a graphical user interface (GUI) with the electronic checklist. The electronic checklist can be used by the maintenance engineer to update the line item status after checking for faults. The maintenance engineer can use the mobile device to capture images of the faults. Image processing algorithms can be applied to detect anomalies present in the captured images.
