Abstract

Application of activation fluids for conformable sand screen deployment is often associated with the additional costs for operators. The current invention offers the electrochemical alternative for the deployment of conformable sand screen in any aqueous service fluid. Conformable sand screen deployment could be based on exothermic Mg reaction with water or brine: 1. We prepare Mg or Mg alloy cylinder or hollow cylinder with OD slightly larger than ID of production pipe at room temperature, but slightly smaller than ID of production pipe when the Mg cylinder is frozen to some low temperature, for example liquid nitrogen temperature. 2. Insert the Mg cylinder inside the production pipe having conformable sand screen placed around it. 3. Bring the joint to the ambient temperature, so that the Mg cylinder expands and stays in a fixed position inside the production pipe with conformable sand screen. 4. Optionally, the Mg cylinder faces may be coated with degradable coating to delay Mg exposure to brine downhole. 5. Install joint in a usual way. By regulating the Mg cylinder size (including ID of the hollow cylinder) we can deliver enough energy for conformable sand screen deployment in brine. While the production pipe acts as a cathode in this reaction, a powder of additional cathodic metal may be dispersed within the Mg cylinder to make the reaction more steady and intense if necessary. Mg cylinder can be made of separate sections, for example cylindrical sections. Voids between sections may contain dry chemicals suitable for lowering pH of the service fluid when contacted by the service fluid. Dry chemicals may be additionally encapsulated by degradable shells.
