Reduce power consumption using CPU core voltage control by temperature

The present invention has an object to reduce the power consumption at the time of normal operation by monitoring the temperature of the CPU and dynamically setting the optimal core voltage. By using the method, it is possible to achieve the power saving without decreasing the operating frequency. Therefore, unlike the conventional art, the power saving does not require the sacrifice in performance.

Needless to say, the power saving may be further enhanced by the combination with the conventional art.

It is known that the minimum core voltage of the CPU depends on the operating ambient temperature. To be precise, the minimum core voltage depends on the core temperature of the CPU, and when the core temperature is low, a higher core voltage is required.

The system needs to operate even at the worst condition (minimum operating temperature) that is provided in the specification, and therefore, the core voltage is set to a voltage for minimum operating temperature.

However, even when the system is used at the minimum operating temperature, the temperature of the CPU increases in the process of the activation by the heat generation of the CPU itself.

That is, since the core voltage is set to a voltage for activating the system at the minimum operating temperature, the set core voltage is higher than actually required

all through the normal operation.

Furthermore, the power consumption of the CPU increases the power to be consumed by a power source circuit that is mounted on the circuit board and that generates core power source.

That is, the decrease of the core voltage brings about a great effect on the reduction of the power consumption.

In this discloser, at the time of the operation, the core voltage is dynamically changed in the following steps, and thereby, it is possible to reduce the power consumption with no influence on the operation of the CPU.
