Abstract

Knives in current circular staplers are only sharpened on the inside as shown below. This idea enables sharpening the blade on both sides in order to: 1. Enable cutting through staples (when firing a circular stapler across an ancillary staple line), 2. Increase the strength of the sharpened edge, 3. Reducing the force to cut through tissue and the washer.

Double Bevel Circular Knife

Summary:

Knives in current circular staplers are only sharpened on the inside as shown below. This idea enables sharpening the blade on both sides in order to: 1. Enable cutting through staples (when firing a circular stapler across an ancillary staple line),
2. Increase the strength of the sharpened edge, 3. Reducing the force to cut through tissue and the washer.

Description:

Enabling a circular stapler to cut staples in an ancillary staple line may result in an improved interface between the circular staple line and the ancillary staple line (i.e. in a double/triple staple technique). Cleanly cutting the staples in the ancillary/linear staple line might minimize tissue trauma resulting from the "dragging" of staples through tissue by the knife of the circular stapler.

Below are several geometries which could be used. The idea behind this would be to spin the knife and the sharpener in opposite directions and/or different speeds to enable sharpening of the outside diameter. In addition a tool could be used to sharpen both sides at the same time.

When the double bevel knife comes in contact with a staple, the edge is well supported and the  force is directed down into the knife. Single sided knives will likely direct the force inward or  outward, dulling the knife easier.
