When travelling through an area with low network coverage, smart phone users are at risk of losing communication capabilities. The process of sending and receiving text messages, for example, is delayed. This communication lapse can result in not only frustration or embarrassment for the parties involved, but also negatively impact business and personal relationships, or even delay responses to critical health issues. For example, a user might receive critical information only minutes before an important meeting, when it is too late to react, when the sender actually sent a text message with

enough lead-time. In another example, a user might receive late notice of a relative in dire health, and not be able to respond in a timely manner.

This issue commonly occurs in low network coverage areas such as remote locations, subways, tunnels, high altitude regions, etc. Therefore, a method is needed by which to inform the user about a possible attenuation in the network signal and further provide recommendations to prevent the possible consequences of losing network at critical

junctures.

The novel contribution is a system and method for predicting attenuation in cellular connectivity and process for mitigating the negative effects of service interruption.

The system can be implemented as an on-demand cloud service. It can be used by various mobile system layers such as system services, messaging apps, navigational apps. The system captures the user's current location and the related attributes. The system analyzes related crowdsourced anonymized data, provided by the user or other subscribers, for network attenuation. The common attributes used in assessment include the user's current location, destination (if available), navigation route, altitude, velocity, etc. After assessing the possibility of the user travelling through any areas

noted for attenuation, the system provides intelligent feedback and accordingly takes actions such as warning the user, notifying the receiver, or caching the navigation data that might be used during such a transition through network attenuated areas.

The main components of the system architecture are: (Figure 1)


• Data collection: Service collects crowdsourced data, provided by the subscribers and the associated user parameters, related to cellular network attenuation.


• Data aggregation: System aggregates and classifies data under various categories such as cell phone signal strength, cell phone model, battery cycles, antenna strength, cellular carrier, etc.
