Current methods for collecting weather data include weather stations [1, 2], weather satellites, and upper air observations . The focus of this article is to uncover new ways to gather and distribute real time weather data, specifically with the use and leverage of airplane sensors.
The economic, safety, and environmental costs associated with radiosondes are very high and the range of action is very limited (just inside the United States). In order to transmit the collected weather data to forecast models at the ground stations and produce better forecasts, a new above-ground data collection solution is needed that more frequently conducts upper air observations at reduced costs and with wider geographical coverage.
At any given time, approximately 10,000 or more commercial airplanes are in the air, following specific air trajectories between any two cities within specific geographical areas. It is possible to map these trajectories to the geographical maps. While in flight, the sensors on the airplane gather weather-related data (e.g., temperature, wind velocity, air pressure, wind direction, humidity, altitude, longitude, latitude, etc.) , . The data includes associated timestamps and location information .
The novel system, method, and apparatus collect the weather-related data from airplanes along with the timestamp and location information, aggregate, package, encrypt it, and then transmit the data to servers at weather ground stations. Systems then analyze the data and distribute it to users (as a payable service) for application to weather prediction models. This process produces more accurate weather predictions.
The components and process for implementing the system for improved weather forecasting include :
1. Airplane onboard sensors: Existing sensors gather the weather-related information, which is the main input for the novel system (weather sensors not currently included in airplanes can be added to the system).
2. Apparatus: Attached to the airplane onboard computer, this component contains storage, memory, processor, encryption engine, and data aggregation software, as well as a radio signal transmitter or radio Wi-Fi and several outputs connectors:
A. Receives from the sensors the captured weather data (through Wi-Fi), timestamps, and location information B. Aggregates, packs, and encrypts the data C. Sends the data to servers located at the ground stations
