Abstract

A through tubing packer that cannot begin its setting sequence until it has located on the top of a deployment sleeve. The seal assembly would be a part of the mandrel once located collet would shear upwards away from a retaining nut allowing movement of the mandrel. This packer would need no running tool and would be set like a tubing stop/ packoff assembly. The use of a shear indicating sub would be needed to see ample force was supplied to the packer. That force verification would not be seen until at surface.

By making the mandrel of a packer one with the seal assembly, this allows you to only set a packer when it is located. Once located, a collet holding the packer rigid with the mandrel shears upward in relation to the mandrel, which allows the packer to begin packing off while being spanged on by slickline or pure weight/ jar hits from a coil unit; a means of delivering the force needed to set packer.

Ran in hole on G Spear

With a short seal assembly, packer locates on top of the seal bore.

Packer cannot set until collet is sheared upward by force delivered from the seal bore by the spangs.

Spang down on the packer until a shear indicator sub is sheared, which is placed above

the G spear. Force needed, will not be noted until BHA has been POOH.
