Abstract

The disclosure concerns industrial networks and fieldbus modules in an industrial network. Specifically this disclosure concerns a solution for hardware high packet number load protection for a low cost Ethernet based fieldbus module or adapter. In the improvement, there is provided a protection function on the Ethernet based fieldbus module or adapter. Different Ethernet protocols are prioritized in advance and then this priority order is applied to hardware processing unit, which will sort incoming packets in priority order to the buffer. Higher priority packets will drop lower priority packets from a full buffer.

In industrial networks low cost Ethernet based fieldbus modules or adapters are typical- ly used. The low cost Ethernet based fieldbus modules or adapters have often embed- ded processors which cannot process enough information in required time to survive Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attack or any other situation with high number packet load.

In these situations security or services of a low cost Ethernet based fieldbus module or adapter will be easily compromised. Good resistance to these kinds of attacks or situa- tions is especially important in future products generations which have connection to Internet. As an example of such future product technology concepts "Industrie 4.0" and "Internet of Things" can be mentioned.

There are many situations in an industrial network when there will be high number of packets load on fieldbus module. One example of such situation is a Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attack. Another example of such situation is a large network where some event will cause all devices to reply in the same time. If in such situation the Ethernet based fieldbus module is implemented with a traditional low cost and slow pro- cessor, then the Ethernet based fieldbus module will have low resistance to high packet number load, i.e. high number of packets during short time. A previous solution to this problem has been the using high cost fieldbus module processor which can manage wire speed loads.
