Abstract

The purpose of this invention is to improve the ergonomics and speed of electrode extension and retraction on a pistol-grip or pencil-grip device. Currently the surgeon must release the hand grip and use his fingers and thumb to extend and retract the electrode. Also, some surgeons may have to glance away from the surgical field to extend or retract the electrode. This may result in the surgeon needing time to reposition the device after moving the electrode. This invention will allow the surgeon to extend and retract the electrode without looking at the device. Additionally, it reduces the amount of motion needed to extend and retract the electrode.

Description

The mechanism for extension and retraction can be constructed with a trigger. The trigger is connected to a pinion gear, or other mechanism. This engages with a feature that, when the trigger moves in the proximal direction, pushes the barrel retainer forward. When the barrel retainer moves forward, it pushes the barrel sheath distally covering the electrode. The mechanism that connects the trigger to the barrel retainer is constructed so it is detained in position. Therefore, when the surgeon pulls the trigger covering the electrode, it remains covered even if the surgeon removes his finger from the trigger.
