Background

Electronic card holders can be produced using polypropylene or PC/ABS based materials to achieve stable dimensions. However, polyolefin based materials such as polypropylene, polyethylene, etc are combustible. When polyolefin based materials for electronic are used for card holder applications, the flame retardancy performance should be improved to reduce fire hazard. Flame retardant materials can be used to improve flame retardancy performance of polyolefin based materials. Especially mineral based and intumescent systems can be used as flame retardant additives to achieve V0 and 5VA classification according to UL 94 test standards. V0 and 5VA classification can also be achieved using mineral and intumescent systems at high loading levels.

Flame retardant additives are very expensive and can cause difficulties in processing with extrusion and injection molding systems. When adding high loading levels of flame retardants, costs will be increased and mold shrinkage will be affected in comparison to neat polymeric materials.
