Abstract

Smart clothing' (i.e. clothing that has some electronic device built-in) is becoming increasingly popular. Unfortunately, such clothing requires a power source, and this power source has to be replaced or recharged periodically for the 'smart' feature to continue working. This can be problematic. This disclosure describes a novel solution to that problem.

The idea is to allow the devices to be charged as part of the washing process. The addition of a varying magnetic field around the drum of the washing machine would allow an electrical charging current to be induced in a wire that is attached to the device in the clothing being washed. As the washing machine rotates, especially during the spin cycle, this would produce a suitable charging current to power the smart clothing device.

The proposal is to allow the devices to be charged as part of the washing process. The addition of a varying magnetic field around the drum of the washing machine would allow an electrical charging current to be induced in a wire that is attached to the device in the clothing being washed. As the washing machine rotates, especially during the spin cycle, this would produce a suitable charging current to power the smart clothing device.

The idea is to have a recharging capability in the clothing based on being able to harvest electrical charge from a varying magnetic field with the required movement provided by the rotation of the drum of the washing machine.

Note: throughout this description, we use the term 'washing machine', but this disclosure applies equally to spin driers and tumble driers.

Placing magnets in one or more positions around the drum of a washing machine/spin dryer/dryer, creating different magnetic field strengths at different point within the drum.

As the drum spins the clothes will move through the magnetic field, meaning that the clothing experiences a varying magnetic field, from which energy can be harvested to recharge a battery within the clothing. The magnets are located around but not fixed to the drum, with the clothing pretty much moving with the drum, the key thing is that the clothes in the drum move through a varying magnetic field, which induces a charging electrical current.

Additional comments : The movement of the device within the drum causes a change in the

magnetic field experienced by the device. This creates a current in a wire in the device which is used to charge the device.

You will note that we have mentioned 1 or more magnets, there is no reason why you couldn't say have 4 magnets spread out such that the clothing moves through 4 peaks and troughs in the magnetic field per rotation. or multiple mags in alternate polarity...key thing is moving the wire through a varying mag field more variance = more charging
