Abstract

A method for testing the lubrication performance of lubricant applied during installation of power cables is described. The test is performed using overhead conductor tensile-strength test equipment, by measuring the pulling force at a uniform pull speed. The test setup includes a tension sensor with a digital display to measure the pulling force and a fixture that simulates the arrangement during cable installation.

Background Lubricants are used extensively in power cable installations to provide ease of movement and to protect the cables. No test method currently exists to evaluate the performance of cable lubricants and greases. In order to compare the friction coefficient of lubricants effectively and accurately, the cable traction speed should be uniform, but this is difficult to achieve in the field.

Description In this work, overhead conductor tensile-strength test equipment was selected as the cable traction device, to provide uniform traction speed over a stroke length of about 10 meters. A test fixture setup was designed to simulate the onsite conditions during cable installation. A test loop and test parameters have also been developed.
