Sometimes animals kept as pets (e.g., dogs, cats) or possibly small children approach a toilet bowl head- or face-first. Due to the unsanitary conditions present in a toilet bowl and other health hazards, such as drowning, a method is needed to prevent this situation.

The novel solution is a camera-based system that determines if a face is approaching the toilet bowl. Based on the user's preferences, the system takes appropriate action (e.g., sound an alarm, send a notification to a caregiver, etc.) in response to detecting a face that is too close to the toilet.

If a child's face is approaching the toilet, then the system can sound a siren as well as notify the guardians via some sort of phone-based communication (options include but not limited to: phone call, text message, push notification, application background process alert). Alternatively, the system can initiate a lock-down mode if the lid is down, temporarily locking the toilet. Another response is to drain the toilet. If it seems that the child is stuck in the toilet face-first, then the police can be notified.

If a pet's face approaches the toilet, then the system can sound a deterrent noise as well as notify the pet's caretaker.
