Abstract

Disclosed is a method and system by which software and an appropriate infrastructure installed in vehicle can predict the time at which the vehicle will reach the next safe conversation scenario. If any calling party calls the driver, then the calling party listens to the dynamic ring-back tone (or message) with a predicted time to reach the next safe conversation scenario and accordingly the calling party can talk to the user.

Method and System for Phone Call Management during Operation of Semi-Autonomous Vehicles and General Vehicle Driving

If a driver receives a phone call while driving, the common response is to not answer the phone call. To answer a call from a vehicle, the driver must be in a safe conversation area. A safe conversation can take place when the user is either in a semi-autonomous vehicle and approaching an area where the vehicle can take over control or is in a general-type vehicle that is stopped for a significant amount of time (e.g., train crossing, border crossing, ferry crossing, extended traffic signals, etc.). While in a safe conversation area, the driver can receive the phone call or retrieve the call from the missed calls history. It is not possible for the calling party to know when the call recipient will next be in a safe conversation scenario. At the same time, the calling party might also be driving, so the recipient user needs to know when both users can participate in the phone call.

A method and system are needed that can predict the time and duration of the net safe conversation scenario and accordingly notify the calling party when to make the phone call.

The novel contribution is a method and system by which software and an appropriate infrastructure installed in vehicle can predict the time at which the vehicle will reach the next safe conversation scenario. If any calling party calls the driver, then the calling party listens to the dynamic ring-back tone (or message) with a predicted time to reach the next safe conversation scenario and accordingly the calling party can talk to the user.

For example, User A is driving a vehicle and User B places a call User A. The system responds to the incoming call with a dynamic ring-back tone that User B hears. The tone or message might state, “User A is about to reach the freeway and will be able to turn the control of the vehicle to the onboard computer in the next five minutes, and the duration of the highway stretch is 10 minutes”. User B can attempt the call again after five minutes.

If the calling party listens to the dynamic ring-back tone, then calling party’s phone will set an auto trigger and automatically start the call when the user reaches the safe conversation scenario, so the calling party does not have to try the call manua...
