Method and System for Detecting and Mapping Single Point of Failure Over a Network

Disclosed is a method and system for detecting and mapping single points of failure (SPOF) over a network. The method and system records single points of failure and a long term behavior of the single points of failure over a network using cognitive analysis techniques based on profiles and configuration rules associated with network devices.

In accordance with an embodiment, the method and system utilizes small software agents on each network device on a Local Area Network (LAN) location for detecting and mapping the single points of failure. The network devices can be, but need not be limited to, routers, switches and the LAN includes various elements such as, but not limited to, servers, network devices, input/output (I/O) card in a server or a network device, intelligent cables and power supply modules.

Further, every element includes a profile indicating if that specific device is primary, secondary, clustered. The Management Information Base (MIB) of the method and system registers the profile information and an Integrated Service Management (ISM) system includes rules to determine if the elements or components being monitored are redundant or clustered. The rules can be, but need not be limited to, automatic checking of configuration, validation of redundancy based on path dependencies and agents in network devices to validate rules from ISM before registering profile information.

The network devices also have intelligence to determine if the connectivity paths of the network devices are redundant.

The Figure below illustrates the method and system for detecting and mapping single points of failure over a network in accordance with the embodiment.

As illustrated in the Figure, the software agents collect multiple parameters from each network device that are sent periodically via the Internet to a cloud hosting solution running a cognitive / analytics engine. The data is collected and analyzed from multiple sources, such as, but not limited to, error logs, Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) alerts, configuration parameters, link port status, spanning tree outputs, output of dynamic routing protocols.
