Abstract

Film-forming performances of new phenylsilsesquioxane resins were assessed for beauty care applications. The uniqueness of this new technology is to combine very good film-forming performances such as film integrity and friction resistance with shine performances. The broad formulation possibilities using those phenylsilsesquioxane resins were also highlighted in cosmetic compositions with examples provided for use in color cosmetics, skin care, sun care, hair care, antiperspirants, or deodorants. The phenylsilsesquioxane resins could be combined with a broad range of cosmetic ingredients covering all types of applications such as foundation, mascara, lipsticks, face care, body care, sunscreen, antiperspirants, deodorants, hair fixatives, hair coloring products, hair treatment cream, and hair mist sprays.

Introduction

In order to propose film-forming silicone resins with multifunctional benefits, new phenylsilsesquioxane resins

(Phenyl silicone resins 1 and 2) were developed. Their film-forming properties were assessed and compared to an

existing silicone resin 3. The new phenylsilsesquioxane resins were also formulated in various cosmetic applications

providing a combination of film-forming and shine properties.

Table 1 summarizes the characteristics of the various silicone resins which were tested in this research disclosure.

Properties of neat materials

1. Solubility

Test method:

Solid Phenyl silicone resin 1 was diluted at 20% in various solvents (hydrocarbons, esters, alcohols and silicone

fluids). Dilutions were placed on bottle-roller for 2 days. Solubility was assessed visually.

Results:

It was shown that the Phenyl silicone resin 1 is soluble in many esters (7 solvents tested) and alcohols but not in

hydrocarbon. It also has a good compatibility with sunscreen agents – see Table 2.
