Abstract

The Purpose of the self-aligning retrievable downhole tool is to provide a downhole tool which has a self-aligning capability during retrieval from the well, (The tool will partially rotate by design with a straight pull upwards). This is to help when recovering tools from down hole to prevent them from becoming stuck when being pulled into and through other downhole equipment or tight restrictions.

Sometimes when recovering down-hole tools, Bridge Plug, Packers etc. they can have an issue when being pulled through other equipment or through Wireline Entry guides, mule shoes etc. This is when the top side/shoulder of the packer/plug can catch the downward facing shoulder or a step, of the equipment that the plug packer is being pulled through. There is more often than not no way of rotating a wireline or Slick-line tool string, recovering the packer or plug. There is no way of rotating the equipment that the packer/plug has caught hung up on. This is due to them being run on wireline/slick line. Continual upward tensile loading or slacking off the weight from the tool string, does not always work to release the stuck plug or packer. Therefore the tool string can be stuck in the well with no method of removal other than milling or fishing operations. The self -aligning retrievable downhole tool overcomes these issues.

Introduction:

The self-aligning retrievable downhole tool can be a packer or bridge plug for example. When equipment is being pulled into and through other the downhole equipment e.g side pocket mandrels, other packers, the self-aligning top section self-rotates with upward motion from surface and then self-rotate when load was removed, (the retrieval motion of the wireline being pulled/jarred for example and loading up a spring). This therefore moves the contact point away from the shoulder, (catching point), thus allowing the downhole tool to become free. It translates upward movement into a rotational movement at the tool.
