The novel arrangement is based on guide tubes used for lifting and/or guiding the top unit i.e. the steering unit. Lifting of the components along the guide tubes enables significant time saving in installation and commissioning. This arrangement may save up to 50% of installation time compared to prior art arrangements. The space requirements inside the vessel are also minimized and the lifting safety is enhanced. The machinery deck, the slip ring unit (SRU), the steering motors and the gears are to be assembled as an independent unit. The machinery deck may have a supporting structure that can utilize guidance from the UW mounting pipes. Lifting of the complete set-up along the guide tubes can be easily arranged by e.g. chain hoist(s), rack and pinion or alternative methods.

Vessels that do not have the possibility to go for dry-docking, typically have thruster
and/or pod units with under water (UW) mounting and/or demounting capability. A
change of a thruster unit is a very critical task and during the procedure the vessel is out
of operation. This means that the time required for the change is very critical in this pro-
Existing solutions are based on the idea of having:
- a minimized amount of components installed into the UW part i.e. light and small com-
ponents, whereby a lot of work is needed inside the vessel in order to complete the in-
- a maximized amount of components installed into the UW part, which means that the
UW part becomes heavy, the protective domes are huge and a lot of space is required
inside the vessel, whereby less work and/or less time is needed for internal installations.
The novel arrangement described here solves the problems associated with the prior art
solutions. The novel arrangement is based on guide tubes used for lifting and/or guiding
the top unit i.e. the steering unit. Lifting of the components along the guide tubes ena-
bles significant time saving in installation and commissioning.
This arrangement makes the procedure very fast and the saving in installation time can
be as much as 50%. At the same time, the space requirements inside the vessel are
minimized. Additionally lifting safety is enhanced.
The arrangement may be used e.g. in connection with Azipod C and Azipod D manufac-
tured by ABB. Azipod ® is a registered trade mark by ABB.
The day rate of a typical drilling rig is around 500.000 USD per day. The novel ar-
rangement may save 2-4 days per change, which means that the earnings may be in-
creased with 1-2 MUSD per overhauling maintenance.
