Abstract

Disclosed is an interactive and dynamic mechanism and advertisement-based system that allows businesses to reach drivers through the vehicle’s internet capable global positioning system (GPS). The core idea is to use a GPS system to display advertisements to the user based on a stored history of LIKE reactions (i.e., similar to indicating a positive reaction, or “liking” an element in social media) to specific businesses.

System For LIKE-Based GPS Advertisements

This disclosure addresses the need of retail businesses to gain customers through effective and efficient communication of special pricing for products and services. A method is needed to utilize systems within vehicles to capture the attention of potential customers that are driving near the business.

The novel contribution is an interactive and dynamic mechanism and advertisement-based system that allows businesses to reach drivers through the vehicle’s internet capable global positioning system (GPS). The core idea is to use a GPS system to display advertisements to the user based on a stored history of LIKE reactions (i.e., similar to indicating a positive reaction, or “liking” an element in social media) to specific businesses.

Through this system, which is active in the vehicle, the user can tap an icon on the GPS interface to LIKE a retail establishment or other point of interest (POI) while driving past it. The system tags the business and builds a history of liked businesses. The GPS system performs a query of an advertisement system via the Internet and finds specials offered by the liked retail establishment(s). The system displays in real time any found advertisements via the GPS interface when the vehicle is in close proximity to the retail location.

Figure 1: High-level overview

The System for LIKE based GPS Advertisements captures user LIKE (and DISLIKE) history, and based on this history provides internet based advertisements to the user based on close proximity to the user LIKEed retail vendors.

The system for LIKE-based GPS advertisements is comprised of the following components (Figure 2):

 GPS Positioning component. This is the normal GPS POI/location component found standard in GPS systems.

 GPS LIKEs System component. This contains the logic to control the system. It gathers position data, and interacts with the GPS LIKEs Interceptor and Advertisement System to build content to be displayed to the end user by the GPS User Interface component.

 Advertisements System component . This advertisement system is accessed via a Representational State Transfer (REST) interface over the Internet. It contains retail vendor advertisements and specials, which can be utilized by the user.

 GPS LIKEs Interceptor. This component handles the user LIKEing and UNLIKEing POIs. It maintains a history of the criteria for future use.
