A method and system is disclosed for enabling communication between a store/shopping mall and a mobile device without requiring cellular network or existing infrastructure network such as Wi-Fi. The system enhances existing iBeacon solutions to enable a mobile device to participate in a two-way communication with computing resources in a store/shopping mall.

Disclosed is a method and system for enabling communication between a store/shopping mall and a mobile device without requiring cellular network or existing infrastructure network such as Wi-Fi. The system enhances existing iBeacon solutions to enable a mobile device to participate in a two-way communication with computing resources in a store/shopping mall.

In accordance with an embodiment, the method and system begins by establishing a micro-location of a mobile device using iBeacons employing existing methods. With the micro-location of the mobile device determined, a mobile device app establishes communications with an in-store ultrasound hardware as illustrated in the following figure.

Ultrasound hardware is placed around the store (for example co-located with the iBeacons in the store). Each ultrasound device is capable of sending data (broadcasting ultrasound signals over a speaker), or receiving data (listening for ultrasound frequencies over a microphone). Similarly the speaker of the mobile device is used to broadcast data over ultrasound and the microphone of the mobile device is used to receive data over ultrasound.

Using the in-store ultrasound hardware, the mobile device app shares information with the store. The additional information may include information such as a direction in

which the user/customer of the mobile device is facing. Similarly, the mobile device app can share information pertaining to the movement of the user by using accelerometer of the mobile device combined with compass. In addition to providing a more precise location measurement, such information can also be used to gauge user’s interest. For example, if a user remains stationary for more than 20 seconds in one spot, this may indicate particular interest in an object at the current location.
