Abstract

PODDED PROPULSION WITH INTEGRATED RUDDER (RUDDERPOD)

A podded propulsion with an integrated rudder (Rudderpod) ensures good efficiency,

which is comparable to the efficiency of an azimuthing propulsion unit, in pulling and

Contra Rotating Propeller (CRP) propulsion concepts. However, due to the lack of an

azimuthing propulsion unit type steering gear and slewing bearing, investment cost with

a Rudderpod is significantly lower. An example of an azimuthing propulsion unit is

Azipod® (registered trade mark of ABB) manufactured by ABB.

In CRP concept, thanks to the fixed position of the propellers, a Rudderpod enables

both (i) closer distance of the CRP propellers and (ii) a continuous shape of the

propeller hubs. Both of these can increase the hydrodynamic efficiency compared to

azimuthing propulsion unit type CRP concepts.

The new inventive concept includes at least:

1. CRP propeller arrangement with continuous shape of propeller hubs. Figures 1 and 2

show two examples of such an idea.

2. Integration of rudder so that pod strut and/or torpedo part support the active (moving)

rudder part. Figures 3 and 4 show two examples of such a rudder support idea. This

idea could be applied in CRP and also in non-CRP propulsion concepts.
